Change of Majors

Changing Your Major to Engineering Technology

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Civil Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete the following Common First Year Courses with a C or better within 2 attempts: ENGR 1300, ENGR 1301, ENGR 1302, ENGR 1303, MATH 1241, PHYS 2101 and PHYS 2101L
  2. Earn a minimum 2.20 cumulative GPA..
  3. If a student is currently enrolled in a required change of major course for a second time or needs to repeat a change of major course requirement, s/he must wait until grades are posted on said attempt before declaring an above major.

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Construction Management must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete MATH 1103 or higher with a grade of C or better.
  2. Complete PHYS 1101 and PHYS 1101L or higher with a grade of C or better.
  3. Earn a minimum 2.20 cumulative GPA.
  4. Pass all currently attempted required courses within three attempts which includes withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.
  5. If a student is currently enrolled in a required course for a second time, s/he must wait until grades are posted before declaring an ETCM major. A student will not be admitted to the major unless the said course is passed within three attempts.
  6. Complete at least one of the following courses: ETCE 1222, CMET 1400, or ETCE 1211 (all require a grade of C or better)

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Fire and Safety Engineering TechnologyOccupational Safety Concentration must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete MATH 1103 or higher with a grade of C or better.
  2. Achieve a GPA between 2.2 – 4.0.
  3. Students currently enrolled in a required course for a second time must wait until grades are posted before declaring an ETCM major. A student will not be admitted to the major unless the course is passed within three attempts.
  4. Pass all currently attempted required courses within three attempts which includes withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.
  5. Complete at least one of the following Occupational Safety courses in the curriculum: ETGR 2230, ETFS 2230 or ETFS 3123 . Other courses may be approved by the Program Director and the Academic Advisor on a case-by-case basis.

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Fire and Safety Engineering TechnologyFire Safety Concentration must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete MATH 1100 or higher with a grade of C or better.
  2. Achieve a GPA between 2.2 – 4.0.
  3. Pass all currently attempted required courses within three attempts which includes withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.
  4. Students currently enrolled in a required course for a second time must wait until grades are posted before declaring an ETCM major. A student will not be admitted to the major unless the course is passed within three attempts.
  5. Complete at least one ETFS course from the curriculum courses listed below. 
    • ETFS 1120 Introduction to Fire Protection
    • ETFS 1152 Fire Protection Law
    • ETFS 2124 Introduction to Fire Prevention
    • ETFS 2132 Building Construction for the Fire Service
    • ETFS 2256 Fire Service Community Relations

NOTE: Completion of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into a program.

Upon satisfying all of the above requirements, students may request admission to an ETCM program by submitting the Change of Major Form. If you wish to add or drop an ETCM concentration, then you must also fill out this form.

Registration for ENGR 1300-1303

Non-majors will have access to sections of ENGR courses off cycle.

UCOL majors should have their current academic advisor request entry to ENGR 1300-130 courses via the College of Engineering Office of Student Development and Success (Smith 228).
