Change of Majors

Changing Your Major to Engineering Technology

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Civil Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete MATH 1103 or higher with a grade of C or better.
  2. Complete PHYS 1101 and PHYS 1101L or higher with a grade of C or better.
  3. Earn a minimum 2.20 cumulative GPA.
  4. Pass all currently attempted required courses within three attempts which includes withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.
  5. If a student is currently enrolled in a required course for a second time, s/he must wait until grades are posted before declaring an ETCM major. A student will not be admitted to the major unless the said course is passed within the three attempts.
  6. Complete at least one the following courses for their desired major:
    • Civil Engineering Technology: ETCE 1104, ETCE 1222, ETGR 1201, or CMET 1680 (all require a grade of C or better)
    • Mechanical Engineering Technology: ETME 1111, ETME 1112, or ETGR 2101 (all require a grade of C or better)

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Construction Management must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete MATH 1103 or higher with a grade of C or better.
  2. Complete PHYS 1101 and PHYS 1101L or higher with a grade of C or better.
  3. Earn a minimum 2.20 cumulative GPA.
  4. Pass all currently attempted required courses within three attempts which includes withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.
  5. If a student is currently enrolled in a required course for a second time, s/he must wait until grades are posted before declaring an ETCM major. A student will not be admitted to the major unless the said course is passed within three attempts.
  6. Complete at least one of the following courses: ETCE 1222, CMET 1400, or ETCE 1211 (all require a grade of C or better)

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Electromechanical Engineering Technology must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete MATH 1103 or higher with a grade of C or better.
  2. Complete PHYS 1101 and PHYS 1101L or higher with a grade of C or better.
  3. Earn a minimum of 2.20 cumulative GPA.
  4. Pass all currently attempted required courses within three attempts which includes withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.

Current UNC Charlotte students who wish to change or declare their major to Fire and Safety Engineering Technology must first satisfy the following requirements in order to be considered eligible for admission:

  1. Complete MATH 1103 or higher with a grade of C or better.
  2. Earn a minimum 2.20 cumulative GPA.
  3. Pass all currently attempted required courses within three attempts which includes withdrawing from a course with a grade of W.
  4. If a student is currently enrolled in a required course for a second time, s/he must wait until grades are posted before declaring an ETCM major. A student will not be admitted to the major unless the said course is passed within the three attempts.
  5. Complete at least one course in the FRST curriculum. This course will be decided upon by the Program Director and Academic Advisor on a case-by-case basis.

NOTE: Completion of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance into a program.

Upon satisfying all of the above requirements, students may request admission to an ETCM program by submitting the Change of Major Form. If you wish to add or drop an ETCM concentration, then you must also fill out this form.

Registration for ETGR 1201, Introduction to Engineering Technology Practices and Principles I.

Non-majors cannot enroll in ETGR 1201 during the fall semester but may enroll during the spring or summer if seats are available.

UCOL majors should have their current academic advisor request entry to ETGR 1201 via the College of Engineering Office of Student Development and Success (Smith 228).
