UNC Charlotte Construction Management Student Teams Perform Well at the Associated Schools of Construction Region 2 Spring Conference
ETCM construction competition teams fared extremely well in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Southeast Region Spring 2021 Conference competitions on February 11-18, 2021. UNC Charlotte teams competed in 3 divisions against teams from across the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico.
With assistance from our industry partners in Charlotte including mentoring and jobsite visits, our teams performed exceedingly well in the competitions.
Our concrete team was under-staffed with only 4 of 6 allowable team members in attendance yet was one of only 5 teams to finish the competition project. Their presentation was exceptionally well done. The students performed well enough that the competition sponsor offered all four students on the team full-time employment at graduation. These students were impressive representatives of our program in the concrete competition; team members were Alex Nowatkoski, Kevin Lopez, Ashton White and Owen Miller.
The heavy civil team performance was incredible, placing just behind the 1st place team from the University of Puerto Rico. Finishing in 2nd place, this team was rated ahead of teams from nationally recognized construction programs at Auburn University, Clemson University, the University of Florida, Virginia Tech and others in the competition. Team members on the heavy civil construction team were Michael Wright, Austin York, James Decker, Kevin Martinez, Brandon Tarlton, and Nathan King.
UNC Charlotte’s commercial team was loaded with students who have competed in ASC before and the lessons learned previously were evident in their performance. They certainly looked like a first-place team during their presentation. The industry sponsors agreed, and the UNC Charlotte team finished in 1st place, ahead of the Virginia Tech, the University of Florida, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and other teams in the commercial competition. The commercial construction team consists of Preston Blake, Boone Owenby, David Genwright, Javier Zubillaga, Trent Black, and Abraham Ogden.
These teams were mentored by faculty members Ben Smith, Jake Smithwick, Wayne Goff, and Glenda Mayo. and industry partners at Lithko Contracting, Barringer Construction, Blythe Development, Harkins Builders, Whiting Turner Contracting, Lane Construction, and JE Dunn Construction.
